Rora Tanner ("Roy") Musselwhite passed away on Friday, Sept. 26, 2008. He was 90.
Born in Raleigh, N.C., to Rora Tanner Sr., and the former Sarah Parrish on May 6, 1918, he was preceded in death by his parents,; his sisters: Ruby and Mildred; and his brother Durward, and his wife "Buzz."
He worked his way through college, graduating summa cum Laude from Appalachian State University in 1940. Enlisting in the Marines later that year, he was shipped to the Japanese Theater in 1942, where he served valiantly under Lieut. Col. "Chesty" Puller, the most decorated Marine in the nation's history, at Guadal Canal and elsewhere in the Pacific.
Surviving bouts of malaria, now-Major Musselwhite returned stateside in 1944, and while undergoing officer training at Harvard, he met and married the former Beulah Bailey "Buzz" Griswold of West Salem, Wis., in 1946.
Accepted into the Harvard School of Business, he decided instead to take a sales job with General Electric, moving first to Cleveland, Ohio, then to Milford, Conn., and finally to Louisville, Ky. Leaving GE in 1954 to accept the position of product manager for Norge Appliances in Chicago, Ill., he went on to accept the position of sales manager for Magic Chef Appliances in Cleveland in 1962, rising to the position of executive vice president and joining the company's board of directors in 1973.
Prior to his retirement in 1985, he served as board chairman of the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers and also served on the board of the American Gas Association.
He is survived by his four sons: John, David, Jim and Steve; their wives Donna, Renee and Mary Gardner; grandchildren: Kevin and his wife, Amanda, Stephanie, Jimmy and Bailey; and great-grandson Ryan.
Visitation will begin at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2008, at Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church followed by a memorial service at 11:30 a.m.
Memorial donations may be made to the Episcopal Metropolitan Ministry in Chattanooga.
Arrangements are by the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory and Florist, 404 South Moore Road.
