In an historic first swim meet for the combined Walker Valley and Bradley Central swim team earlier this week, the Bearstangs swam against McMinn County/McMinn Central, dropping a 157-120 decision.

The first dual meet for the county wide high school team featured 24 swimmers, of which 18 were in their first high school meet and 11 had only been swimming for a month.

The team was competitive in several individual heats and won the boys 200 freestyle relay and girls 200 freestyle relay.

The first place freestyle relays featured Anna Harvey, Morgan Miller, Bristol Snider, Laura Evans, Joe Keller, Paul Patterson, Patrick Shultz and Christian Torbett.

Double winners included Christian Torbett in 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly with a time of 59.03 and Bristol Snider in 100 butterfly and 50 freestyle.

Torbett’s 59.03 in 100-yard butterfly is a state championship qualification time and the first of many to come.

Close second place finishes were scored by Anna Harvey in 100 butterfly and Morgan Miller in 100 freestyle

The Bearstangs had several swimmers who are within seconds of state qualification times, including Anna Harvey, Morgan Miller and Bristol Snider in various strokes.

The team travels to Cocke County on Dec. 1 for its next dual meet, then a series of invitational meets in December and January.

The team is excited to be racing and competitive after weeks of early morning practices and hard work.
