Secret Santas in Fort Oglethorpe, Ga., and Cleveland are helping the Salvation Army reach its goal of $400,000 for the annual Angel Tree Program. Unfortunately, 1,149 angels remained for “adoption” when the deadline came. The deadline was extended to Dec. 9.

So far, 3,614 have been adopted from Angels Trees located in Bradley Square Mall.

Santa made an anonymous donation of 37 $100 outside the Kmart on Battlefield Parkway in Fort Oglethorpe and struck again in Cleveland with 10 crisp $100 bills.

“Our secret Santa struck again, leaving 10 crisp $100 bills in the Red Kettle at Cooke’s Food Store with a note,” Cleveland Corps Administrator Sgt. Ruthie Forgey said Tuesday. “This is the third year in a row.”

The hand-printed note simply stated, “Please accept this gift to help those in need. Warm clothes for a family, food for those who are hungry, a toy for a child.”

The Salvation Army Angel Tree provides Christmas assistance for needy children, their families and senior citizens who would not otherwise receive gifts, including necessities like food and warm clothing.

Forgey said the local Salvation Army registered 4,763 angels, which represents a 39 percent increase from three years ago, possibly a result of the economic recession or perhaps a combination of that and natural disasters.

“We are asking the community to really be generous during these last few days of Angel Tree so all the angels will be adopted and have a wonderful Christmas,” she said. “We also need for those who have adopted angels to return these gifts as soon as they possibly can.”

Salvation Army Area Commander Major Al Newsome thanked the donors.

“This will certainly help us get closer to our goal of $400,000 for this year’s Red Kettle Campaign,” he said.

Monetary donations are needed to purchase gifts for children and seniors. Donations may be placed in any of the Red Kettles in front of local retailers. Donations by mail should be addressed to 437 Inman St., Cleveland TN 37311.
