The American Red Cross weekend Drive-in and Donate fundraiser brought in more than $30,000 for Superstorm Sandy relief, with additional money still expected to come in.

The effort was held at seven area Wal-Mart locations both days and at Ross’s Landing under the Olgiati Bridge off Riverside Drive on Friday. Participating Wal-Mart Stores included those in Athens, Cleveland (two locations), Hamilton Place, Hixson, Ooltewah and Signal Mountain. Red Cross staff and more than 30 volunteers were stationed at all locations to accept cash or checks.

“This was a huge undertaking which really highlights the care and generosity of our community,” said Sandy Matheson, regional chief development officer.

“I was so inspired by the solid support from individuals, schools, churches, the business and corporate community, media and all the volunteers. Our community really came together for this event. I know our neighbors in the Northeast are grateful for these donations which provide not only food and shelter for their immediate needs, but also support more than 5,800 volunteer workers from all 50 states deployed to the area.”

The Red Cross reminds those who missed the opportunity to donate this past weekend to visit redcross.org, call 1-800-REDCROSS (733-2767) or text REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.

People may also mail donations directly to the local American Red Cross at 801 McCallie Avenue, Chattanooga, TN 37403.
