‘Herbs That Heal’ presentation given at AGC meeting

The Aldersgate Garden Club met on Feb. 1 at the home of Barbara Brown, who was hostess for the meeting. She gave a devotion titled “Gifts of Grace,” followed by the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.

Billie Blair, president, opened the business meeting. Minutes were given by Assistant Secretary Lelia Ware and the treasurer’s report was given by Kay Cox in the absence of the treasurer. Blair reminded everyone of the district’s “Day of Gardening” workshop at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in East Ridge. Some of the members plan to attend.

The club has been asked to participate in the 100 Black Men of Bradley County Inc. annual scholarship banquet on March 9 at Lee University.

The hostess gave a very informative program on “Herbs that Heal.” Ten of the top healing herbs are rosemary, oregano, dill, cayenne, cilantro, mint, curry powder, parsley, basil and ginger. Brown began by giving a quiz to the members on these 10 herbs:

— Rosemary has shown a lot of cancer-protective potential in that it contains two powerful antioxidants that destroy the heterocyclic amines, or HCA.

— Oregano oil has been classically used as a disinfectant, an aid for ear, nose and throat/respiratory infections, and any sort of bacterial or viral conditions.

— Dill contains calcium and iron, and the oils in the plant may help to neutralize carcinogens. It also has a number of beneficial healing properties for the digestive system and has been used since ancient times to treat heartburn and diarrhea.

— Cayenne is a highly effective pain reliever for improving circulation, healing soar throats, and stimulating sweating to help relieve cold symptoms.

— Cilantro acid reverses the toxin buildup that causes chronic fatigue, joint paint and depression.

— Mint counteracts nausea and vomiting, promotes digestion, calms stomach muscle spasms, and eases hiccups. It may also be useful in reducing headache pain.

— Curry Powder could relieve your pain and might prevent colon cancer and Alzheimer’s Disease.

— Parsley is a diuretic herb and can help keep our body’s plumbing running smoothly by causing it to produce more urine.

— Basil is antiinflammatory and antibacterial, as well as a good source of magnesium and antioxidant.

— Ginger is excellent for treating upset stomachs and is still recommended to pregnant women today to combat morning sickness. It is also effective for treating gas, bloating, sore throats and colds. Brown recommended that before using these herbs you discuss it with your physician so as to make sure it does not clash with any other medicine you might be taking.

Each member was given a packet of herbs of choice to take home with them and an information flyer on the herbs discussed.
