The public will have its choice of two political debates Monday evening at Cleveland Middle School or Cleveland State Community College.
Incumbent 3rd District U.S. Congressman Chuck Fleischmann will debate Democratic challenger Dr. Mary Headrick at the middle school while Democrat Andrae McGary and Republican Todd Gardenhire face off at Cleveland State in the Johnson Theatre for the 10th State Senate seat.
Both debates are at 6:30 p.m.
The Cleveland Lions Club and Bradley County Bar Association are joined by the Cleveland Rotary Club in sponsoring a political forum featuring candidates for the 10th District State Senate, formerly held by Andy Berke of Chattanooga.
The Cleveland Education Association is sponsoring the debate that is likely to be the only meeting between Fleischmann, a Republican from Hamilton County, and Headrick, a Democrat from Union County.
Chattanooga City councilman Andrae McGary was the winner of a crowded Democrat primary field by a significant vote. Chattanooga businessman Todd Gardenhire was initially reported as the winner of the Republican primary by 15 votes. Shortly following the count, the Hamilton County Election Commission noted some Gardenhire votes had not been included in the count and his margin of victory increased to 40 votes.
U.S. Congressman Dr. Scott DesJarlais will not attend the forum to debate his challenger, State Sen. Eric Stewart; however, forum coordinators are attempting to arrange for DesJarlais to participate in a forum with Stewart on Oct. 23 at noon at Cleveland State. Further announcements regarding the Oct. 23 forum will be forthcoming.
Questions for the debate between McGary and Gardenhire will come from members of the respective organizations, students at Cleveland State Community College and the public at large. Proposed questions may be presented to any member of the Cleveland Lions Club, Cleveland Rotary Club or Bradley County Bar Association.
Attorney James F. Logan Jr., former president of both the Lions Club and the Bradley County Bar Association will serve as moderator.
