Senior Maggie Opelt was named the SSAC Female Runner of the Week, following a record setting performance on Saturday at the Royal Cross Country Challenge.

Opelt’s 5K time of 17:49.55 is a new Lee record, breaking former Lady Flame and All-American Anna Hrushka’s previous record of 18:00.7. Overall, Opelt finished 10th out of 201.

Competing against NCAA Division I, II and III, plus NAIA teams, the Lady Flames finished 12th overall out of 21 teams at the Charlotte, N.C., race.

Achten earns women’s

soccer honors

For the first time this season, soccer player Jamie Achten has been named the SSAC Offensive Player of the Week, for the week ending Oct. 16.

Achten, the reigning NAIA Player of the Year, contributed in both of the Lady Flames’ wins last week, as the Lee ladies moved to 11-2 on the season, and 8-0 in conference play.

In Tuesday’s contest at Emmanuel College, Achten scored a pair of goals and earned assists on another pair of goals, leading the Lady Flames to a 10-0 victory. Saturday evening, the senior scored another pair of goals, in addition to one assist, in an 8-1 win over Brenau University.

The three assists for the week move Achten to third place on the career NAIA assist list, 11 away from the all-time NAIA record.

The women’s team returns to the Lee Soccer Field twice this week, hosting Truett-McConnell College at 5 p.m., Tuesday evening. No. 6-ranked Martin Methodist College will visit Thursday at 5 p.m., for a non-conference showdown with the second-ranked Lady Flames.

Zelenovic earns First

conference honor

Following one of the busiest weeks of the Lady Flames’ season, Marija Zelenovic has been named the SSAC Volleyball Player of the Week. The fourth-ranked Lee ladies went 5-0 for the week, including wins over rival Emory University, No. 11 Taylor University, and No. 5 Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

Zelenovic came up big for the Lady Flames against Taylor, earning 16 kills, five aces, eight digs and two blocks. She returned with another solid performance against Embry-Riddle, totaling 15 kills and four blocks in the NAIA Game of the Week.

For the week, Zelenovic totaled 57 kills, 22 digs and 14 blocks. She also contributed nine service aces. The Lady Flames return to action Tuesday, at Shorter University, followed by a Thursday match at Union (Ky.) College.
