Dennis H. Bagwell Jr., a retired U.S. Air Force master sergeant and an instructor at the Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, Ga., recently earned the unique praise of one of his award-winning students.

Bagwell is the son of Richard and Nancy Hughes of Cleveland.

One of Bagwell’s students — cadet Do Yuen Kim — was recently awarded a National Merit Scholar certificate. This was an historic award because it marked cadet Kim as being the first cadet in the 100-year history of the Riverside Military Academy to be named a National Merit Scholar.

While accepting the honor at an awards ceremony at the academy, Kim gave full credit to Bagwell as his teacher and mentor. Kim described Bagwell as the inspiration for his academic success.

The cadet said Bagwell taught him “... perseverance, integrity, attention to detail and how to focus on a specific goal.” He stressed his National Merit Scholar award would not have been possible without his teacher’s ongoing support and encouragement.

In his acceptance speech, Kim suggested “... a national merit teacher award ought to be given to Mr. Bagwell.” The Riverside Military Academy instructor previously received a Georgia Star Teacher award in 2012.

Bagwell has a master’s degree in military history from the University of North Georgia and a master’s equivalent in the Russian language and Russian area studies from the Defense Language Institute.
