The Aldersgate Garden Club recently held its monthly meeting on Nov. 18 at the Bradley-Cleveland Community Services Agency with 11 members in attendance.

Billie Blair, president, opened the meeting. Chaplain Barbara Ector gave the devotion, “O Give Thanks to the Lord,” followed by the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.

Lelia Ware, assistant secretary, gave the secretary’s report for September and October. Joan Steward passed out the treasurer’s report.

Charlotte Scott, co-chairman of the Blue Star Marker Dedication held on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, received a Certificate of Appreciation presented to the club from the National Garden Clubs Inc.

Blair discussed and plans were finalized for the Club’s Christmas Party on Dec. 2 at the Urbane Road Senior Center. Other upcoming activities include the club’s donation presented to the Cleveland Emergency Shelter on Nov. 2 for men and women at the shelter.

The TFGC Green’s Tea will be held at the Ivan Racheff House in Knoxville on Dec. 9 from noon to 3 p.m.

The hostess, Kay Cox, gave a presentation on Container Gardening. Cox is serving as Container Gardening Committee chairman on the Tennessee Federation of Garden Clubs State Board.

This project is also one of the three interests of the National Garden Club President’s Project, Plantings for Public and Special Places.

These areas of interest include Garden with Edibles, Container Gardens and Trees and Shrubs. Cox discussed the benefits of container gardening, including accessibility, side-steps soil problems, flexibility, little or no land requirements, and being both economical and educational.

Along with providing facts and advantages about container gardening, she displayed an educational board highlighting uses for containers, selecting containers, caring for your containers, and choosing your soil for them.

She had exhibits of container pots, also, with her board showing how a variety of different plants could be planted together to make a colorful setting.

Handouts about container gardening were available, as well as pictures showing creative types of containers used to plant flowers and shrubs in them to beautify hard-to-grow areas. The club will participate in this project, also.

Thanks to the hostess was given by Dorothy Keith.

Other members in attendance were Sheryl Gash, Cynthia Humes, Charlotte Timberlake and Jackie Westfield.
