Alva Jean Gates, 78, a lifelong resident of Cleveland, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday night, Jan. 23, 2014, in a local hospital surrounded by her family.

She was born here on Dec. 8, 1935, a daughter of the late Earl and Genoa Barrett.

She was of the Baptist faith and a member of Clingan Ridge Baptist Church. She worked for many years and had retired from the Charleston Hosiery Company.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis “Dink” Gates; one sister, Mary Ruth Pullin; and one brother, J.B. Barrett.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory four children: Randy Gates and his wife, Patricia, Susie Gates Frey, Tim Gates and his wife, Donna, and Tyra Gates; nine grandchildren: Lindsey Gates Paturalski, Nichole Scott, Matthew Wagner, Adam Gates, Lisa Gates, Cody Gates, Seth Robinette, Garrin McBryar and Paige Robinette; six great-grandchildren: Hailee Gates, Ashlyn Gates, Balin Gates, Quintin Scott, Haley Wagner and Matthew Wagner II; one great-great- grandchild, Jaston Welch; and several other family members, church family, and a host of special friends.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Clingan Ridge Baptist Church, 2412 Georgetown Road N.W. in Cleveland.

A graveside service and interment beside her late husband is planned for Sunday, Jan. 26, 2014, at 2 p.m. in Samples Memorial Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Adam Gates officiating.
