A day-care center and some area schools were locked down late Wednesday afternoon after an armed robber left a store on foot, headed in the direction of the schools.

Just before 4 p.m., a black male dressed in dark clothing with his face painted white entered the Mr. Zip location on North Lee Highway, wielding a knife.

According to reports, he demanded money from the store’s clerk, then left the store on foot. He escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Within one minute, Cleveland Police Department officers began arriving on the scene while other law enforcement, including Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency officers and Bradley County Sheriff’s deputies, combed the area for the suspect.

Bradley County 911 reports indicated the suspect was also wearing a toboggan-style hat over his face, but also had face paint. The suspect ordered the clerk into a bathroom before he left the store.

Bradley County deputies and school resource officers locked down North Lee Elementary School and made sure a nearby day-care center and Tennessee Christian Preparatory School were secured as the search for the suspect continued.

According to Evie West, information officer for Cleveland Police Department, the robber was described as wearing a dark green sweatshirt and dark pants. Authorities also said he had a dreadlocks hairstyle.

Deputies and police checked out storage warehouses and other structures in the area. One caller to 911 noted that she had seen a driver pick up a male and thought it was suspicious. When the caller got home, she learned through social media of the robbery and called 911 to report what she had observed, 911 reports noted.

Anyone with possible information regarding the robbery can contact the Cleveland Police Department at 728-7311 (follow the correct voice prompts). The number is a universal information number.
