The captain of the Bradley County Criminal Investigations Division has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of a TBI investigation.

Capt. James “Jimmy” Woody was placed on leave Saturday evening, according to Chief Deputy Wayne Bird.

“The TBI is currently investigating allegations of misconduct against James Woody. The investigation is open and ongoing. It will be turned over to the district attorney general for review when completed,” said Kristin Helm, information officer for TBI.

Helm confirmed one of the allegations against Woody includes tampering with evidence, but provided no further details.

Bird also could provide no further information about the investigation.

According to Bird, Woody notified him Saturday of the investigation. After speaking with Woody, Bird placed him on administrative leave.

“We have no details of the accusation made. It (the investigation) didn’t go through us,” Sheriff Jim Ruth said Wednesday evening.

During a phone interview earlier today with Woody’s attorney, Scott Kanavos, he also stated he couldn’t comment about the ongoing investigation.

Woody is a 26-year veteran of law enforcement, beginning his career as a reserve deputy.
