She was a faithful attendee and children’s worker at McGaughey Chapel Church since her family moved to the area 70 years ago.
She was an avid and accomplished quilter who loved to make quilts and give them to her family. She celebrated her 93rd birthday on Easter Sunday with her family, even going outside to watch her great and great-great-nieces and nephews enjoy an egg hunt.
She was a loving aunt, sister, and mother substitute to her brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews and will be very much missed.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Rasha and Mary Ethel Hayes Gates; sisters: Esther Gates Plemons, Rosa Gates Crow, Reba Gates Burton, Dora Gates Stapp; and brothers: Tommy Gates, Clarence Gates, Lonnie Gates, Jim Gates.
Survivors include her sister, Jessie Gates Foster of Ringgold, Ga.; sister-in-law, Bessie Gates of Dalton; brother-in-law, Dale Burton of Chattanooga; nieces and nephews: Karen Crow Roark of Dalton, Larry and Jerri Burton of Lawrenceville, Chris and Mary Burton of Chattanooga, Darlene and Mike Robertson of Aragon, Ga., Doretta and Ed Meeks of Ringgold, George and Cheryl Plemons of Chattanooga, Carl and Sarah Stapp of Boise, Idaho, Kathy and Danny Henson of Ringgold, Kendall and Lori Foster of Ringgold, Randall and Tracey Foster of Ringgold, and Janis Swanson of Ringgold; several great-nieces and nephews; and great-great-nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 26, 2010, at McGaughey Chapel Methodist Church with the Rev. Danny Henson and the Rev. Jackie Painter officiating.
Interment will be in Hopewell Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Julian Peeples Funeral Home in Dalton, Ga.
