The Charleston-Calhoun-Hiwassee Historical Society will hold its regular monthly meeting today at 3 p.m. at Calhoun United Methodist Church in Calhoun.

The program will be a compelling panel discussion and presentation led by Bryan Reed, associate professor of history and department chair for social sciences at Cleveland State Community College.

Reed, who is also president of the Bradley County Historical & Genealogical Society, will focus the program on Black History Month. Last month, Reed presented “From Slavery to Freedom: Charleston African Americans after the Civil War.” He discussed how Charleston families had to adjust and transition after the Civil War and emancipation of slaves. This month will be a follow up discussion of this topic.

Reed was invited in June to present his research on the life of Clinton Calloway, at the prestigious National Rosenwald Schools Conference in Tuskegee, Ala. A Cleveland native, Calloway was a key figure in the development of Rosenwald Schools and a champion of educational advancement for African Americans.

“Bryan is one of our community’s leading researchers of African American history. We are so fortunate to have his knowledge and expertise here in our communities,” said Melissa Woody, CCH Historical Society member and development chair.

“He has uncovered stories about local African American families that have never before been researched or written. His presentation will mention many family names familiar to most of us who live in the area.”

The group meets each month on the third Sunday at 3 p.m. at various locations in the Calhoun and Charleston communities. Membership is only $10 per year and comes with special discounts at the groups events throughout the year.
