Dancers from Cleveland and Chattanooga Dance and Performing Arts Center recently spent the weekend filming with the cast of Dance Moms in Atlanta. On Nov. 8, four CDPAC soloists — Emily Derrick, 14, Ashley Harper, 13, Shelbee Jordan, 9, and Lexi Valliere, 13 — auditioned for Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition and Dance Moms. There were more than 1,000 dancers from as far as Seattle who auditioned before Abby Lee Miller and Lifetime TV Producers of AUDC & Dance Moms.

CDPAC dancer Shelbee Jordan made it to the second round of auditions. Derrick and Valliere both made it to the sixth round, which contained the final 30 dancers who were chosen out of more than 1,000. It was the first professional dance audition for the four Avant Garde Company and CDPAC soloists. The entire day was filmed for the upcoming season of Dance Moms and AUDC. Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition Season 2 Winner Mckaylee True of Lincoln, Neb., was in attendance as well and auditioned, also, for Dance Moms with CDPAC dancers.

On Nov. 9, five CDPAC soloists and one duo competed at the Invitation Only dance competition held by Masters of Dance Arts, In10sity Dance and Dance Moms Invitational at The Center Stage Atlanta — specifically filmed for the upcoming season four of Dance Moms. There were a few hundred dancers who competed in the solo, duo, trio and small group division.

Derrick and Valliere competed with their duo “This Year’s Love.” They were awarded the only Platinum in the Elite Teen Duo/Trio Division and placed first Overall Grand Champion in the Elite Teen Duo/Trio Division — beating the trio from Abby Lee Dance Company of Paige Hyland, Chloe Lukasiak and Kendall Vertes, who are cast members of Dance Moms on Lifetime TV.

Both CDPAC petite soloists who competed placed in the Top 10 in the Elite Petite Division. Two CDPAC teen dancers placed in the Top 10 in the Elite Teen Division. Valliere, 13, placed ninth Overall Grand Champion in the Elite Teen Division. Derrick, 14, placed 10th Overall Grand Champion in the Elite Teen Division.

Brittany Zachman, 7, placed fifth, and Shelbee Jordan, 9, placed fourth in the Overall Grand Champion in the Elite Petite Division. Mackenzie Ziegler, 9, cast member of Dance Moms from Pittsburgh, placed second Overall Grand Champion in the Elite Petite Division.

After the competition, Miller came over to CDPAC Executive Director Nisa Hooper and complimented her on the beautiful duo she created and choreographed. “I loved your duo!” she said. “ It was beautiful.”

Hooper and Miller continued their conversation discussing various dance related topics. Hooper and Miller are colleagues and have both been in attendance to Dance Masters of America Nationals in New York City and Washington, D.C., in 2006 and 2008 together. Hooper a Member of Dance Masters of America Chapter No. 33 Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia and Miller Pennsylvania Dance Masters.

On Nov. 10, several CDPAC Dancers took master classes from Miller, who was assisted by her dancers: Maddie Ziegler, Mackenzie Ziegler, Kendall Vertes and Nia Frazier. Members of her staff were there as well, including Gianna Martello.

During the master classes, Miller evaluated and narrowed the more than 700 dancers down to 12 to receive a full summer (2014) scholarship to the Abby Lee Dance Company Pittsburgh to train with her. CDPAC dancer Valliere was awarded a summer scholarship and will attend with Hooper along with her mother Allyson Valliere, who is also the Children’s hip-hop and pre-ballet teacher at both CDPAC locations.

CDPAC’s Avant Garde Company currently holds 13 national championship titles as well as 16 2013 Tennessee state titles beating out every studio in Tennessee competing as well as local studios that attended.

CDPAC staff includes Hooper, assistant director Caitlyn Lynn, Valliere, Britney Reid, Abigail Bowman, Shannon Johnson, Jacob Carrell, Will Linder, Desmond Smith, Abbi Cook and studio manager Leslie Dixon. Derrick is the 2013 Miss CDPAC.

CDPAC’s Winter Gala will be held Dec. 21, at 3 p.m., at Girls Preparatory School Performing Arts Complex in Chattanooga. Tickets go on sale Dec. 2 at 4 p.m., at both Cleveland and Chattanooga locations.
