Cleveland Middle School’s Varsity Dance Team recently traveled to Sevierville to compete in the Universal Dance Association Smoky Mountains Dance Competition.

At this competition, there were seven middle schools from the states of Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, and Kentucky in the junior high hip-hop dance division. The CMS Varsity Raiderettes won first place in the junior high hip-hop division, defeating West Wilson Middle School of Mount Juliet; Pleasant Grove Middle School of Pleasant Grove, Ala.; Halls Middle School of Knoxville; Heritage Middle School of Ringgold, Ga.; Ringgold Middle School of Ringgold; and Livingston Middle School of Livingston.

One of the judges commented on the score sheet, “It was so good I did not want the dance to end!”

In the junior high pom division, the seventh- and eighth-grade competitive dance Raiderettes won second place, defeating Pleasant Grove Middle School of Pleasant Grove, Ala.; Clay-Chalkville Middle School of Birmingham, Ala.; Caudill Middle School of Richmond, Ky.; and Decatur County Middle School of Parsons. The CMS dancers were only beaten by Farragut Middle School with a margin of 0.8 between the scores. The champion dancers received a UDA Dance Division Winner banner, individual medals and trophies.

“This win was very special to us all. When you have seven teams in your division from four different states and you pull out the top score, it makes all those grueling hours of practice worth it. Sweat and hard work do pay off,” head coach Kelly Owens said.

The CMS Varsity Competitive Dance Raiderettes are Chloe Baggett (captain), Adria Smith, Josey McCluskey, Taylor Allison, Narissa Riley, India Wilkins, Emma Brusky, Elizabeth Owens, Teya Kelsey, Tehya Dyer, Mallory Gumm, Alex Paladian, Riley Calandrino, Whitney Copeland, Courtney Hamilton, Madison Eschenbrenner, Sarah Emily Sentell, Cassidy Johnson, Jessica Johnson, Julia Holt Ledford, Cassie Jones, Anna Craig, Maya Sharma, Jordan Kidd and Jessica Davis.
