Ashley Ward returned home Sunday afternoon and found a note to call the Sheriff’s Office.
Deputy Tommy Kimsey reportedly shot Kayce, a blue-heeler/pit bull mix, in the head and the dog had run from the scene.
The dog eventually returned home and was taken to a veterinarian for treatment.
“She is recovering nicely,” Ward said today during a phone interview.
According to his report, Kimsey had been dispatched to the Dallas Lane neighborhood where neighbors had reported the dog running at-large.
The report indicated one of the neighbors had said the dog “charged at him,” and acted similarly toward the deputy.
Ward said when her family left home that morning, her dog had been fed, had been given fresh water and was on her lead in the backyard.
Kimsey noted in his report that when he arrived, the dog was in the roadway. He reported that he exited his vehicle and the dog began to act aggressively.
“It tried to charge and bite me,” Kimsey said in his report.
Kimsey got his catch pole and followed the canine to its home. According to his report, the dog continued to be aggressive and he contacted Animal Control to respond to the scene.
Kimsey stated he had gotten the dog into the back yard of the Ward home and the animal continued to charge and bite the catch pole.
He said he attempted to get the dog into its pen and it continued to spin, growl and try to bite him.
“I pulled my duty weapon and fired one round,” Kimsey stated.
The canine ran from the scene, according to the report.
Ward said when she returned home she discovered the note from the BCSO. The dog underwent surgery and continues to recover, she reported.
“She was a rescue. Kayce and her brother were survivors in the April 2011 tornadoes. She was trapped under a destroyed home with her brother for two days,” Ward said.
Ward said she had spoken with Capt. Brian Quinn of the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office who said the investigation is ongoing.
