The Charleston-Calhoun-Hiwassee Historical Society will hold its May meeting Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Historic Charleston Cumberland Presbyterian Church. The present congregation is now located on Highway 11 just south of Charleston. Several current members are descended from those early pioneers.

In addition to the Historical Society meeting, church members invite the community to join them in the old building for their morning worship service, which begins at 11 a.m.

The church was used during the Civil War as a hospital. Marks can still be seen where the horses chewed at the window sills while tied outside.

The graveyard in front of the church holds its history and the history of many early Charleston residents.

The Historical Society is working on several projects, including The Hiwassee River Heritage Festival-100-year Charleston School Reunion which will be held June 3 and 4.

If you are a Charleston graduate, attended Charleston at any time during the past 100 years, have friends who attended or just want to come help celebrate, come to the meeting and find out more about what is planned.

The society thanks the Charleston Cumberland Presbyterian Church for the opportunity to meet in such a historic setting. Come and feel the presence of the past as the future is planned.
