After extensive renovations and repairs to the structure housing the new store, owner Gene Wade felt confident it was ready to open and serve the area.
"I want to thank Bradley County officials, Piggly Wiggly management, department heads and staff who tirelessly worked to see that this store could open and, most of all, thank you to this community for helping make this possible," Wade said.
One of 14 stores owned by Wade, the Charleston Piggly Wiggly is the fifth Piggly Wiggly in that chain to be opened. Eric Williams, general manager for all stores, was at the Charleston location to make certain the opening was a smooth transition.
"Our plans were to open the store in February, but Mr. Wade wanted to give this community a store to be proud of and the renovations continued,” Williams said. The store provides local shopping, offering fresh deli items, cafeteria-style homecooked meals, quality meats and produce, along with many other items shoppers would normally have had to travel outside the area to buy.
"This is a beautiful store which we have needed for some time. It's great they have done this for our community and we look forward to having them here," said Hank Hayden, Charleston chief of police.
