The Blue Raiders got the new wrestling season off to a winning start Thursday against Northwest (Ga.) Whitfield, but Cleveland head coach Jake Yost was not close to being satisfied with the 42-31 win.

“We got a win and that’s good, but we lost a bunch of matches and are not where we need to be. We’re losing in a lot of positions that we’ve worked on and we just have to keep getting better,” said Yost.

The Blue Raiders gave up points in six weight classes losing to pins by the Bruins at 120,160, 220 and 285 pounds. Northwest Whitfield won a major decision at 106.

Ethan West (195), Chris DeBien (126), Ezra Taylor (145) and Josh Hamilton (182) got pins for the Blue Raiders. Austin Stevison earned a technical fall win at 132 and Tristan Blansit picked up a major decision at 113.

Victor Barbosa battled to a 5-4 decision at 138 pounds and William Hass won by forfeit at 152.

“We were weakest tonight defending our legs from the neutral position. We were giving up our legs way too easy and not doing the correct things when they did get to our legs. We’ve got to keep working on that and keep getting better at it,” Yost said of the Raiders’ first effort.

“We’ve got a lot of work to do, we’ve got a long way to go. To get where we need to be in February we’ve got a long way to go, so we’ve got to get to work.”

Cleveland will be back in action this weekend at the Kennesaw Duals in Kennesaw, Ga.
