Just before 5 p.m. Thursday, two vehicles collided on Spring Place Road, killing one person and injuring another.

The crash happened in a straight portion of the 3300 block of Spring Place.

According to preliminary reports from the Bradley County 911 Center, one of the vehicles caught fire.

Kim Thompson, 53, was identified as the person killed.

According to reports from the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit, Christina Moore, 41, was injured and transported via Bradley County Emergency Medical Service to SkyRidge Medical Center.

Thompson would have turned 54 years old Saturday, the report noted. She became Bradley County’s first traffic fatality of 2014.

According to the traffic investigator’s preliminary report, Thompson was driving a Toyota Camry when she crossed into the southbound lane of Spring Place Road and collided head-on with Moore’s Kia van.

The van reportedly caught fire but the flames were extinguished quickly.

LifeForce helicopter was dispatched to the scene and then diverted to SkyRidge, where both Moore and Thompson were transported.

According to reports, paramedics performed CPR measures on Thompson, who was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Capt. W.G. Campbell of the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office said today the investigation into the cause of the crash is continuing.

“Again we stress that lives can change in an instant,” Campbell said.

“At this point in the investigation, we haven’t made any determination to the cause of this tragic crash,” he added.

In 2013, eight fatalities were recorded in Bradley County, down from 23 in 2012.
