Blood Assurance is hosting a 5 blood drive on Aug. 24 at various locations throughout the Cleveland area.

At a time of year when blood donations are decreasing, area residents can give the gift of life at the North Cleveland Walmart from 9:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 24.

The first 100 donors will receive a coupon from Applebee’s for a free appetizer or dessert.

After leaving Walmart, the Blood Assurance bloodmobile will go to SkyRidge Medical Center from 3 to 6 p.m.

Blood Assurance is the sole provider of blood components to SkyRidge Medical Center, in addition to more than 50 hospitals and health care facilities throughout the region.

The final stop for the bloodmobile will be First Baptist Church of Cleveland, from 4 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. While there, donors can enjoy free slices of pizza from Papa Murphy’s Pizza.

Bruster’s Ice Cream will give a coupon for one free pint of ice cream to all donors at the blood drives.

Donors must be at least 16 or 17 years old with parental consent to donate blood, and weigh at least 110 pounds. Donors are encouraged to drink plenty of water prior to donating blood in addition to eating iron-rich foods.

Blood donors can also visit the Blood Assurance office at 2855 Keith St. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
