The Cougars came up on the short end of a 3-2 final score as pitching dominated game one of the series on Friday.
Brandon Zajac continued his good work as he locked horns with Eagle ace Ronny Herndon in a good old-fashioned pitcher's duel as hits and runs were few and far between for much of the afternoon.
The Eagles put the first run of the day on the board in the bottom of the fourth as Patrick Schloss plated a run with a single after Stephen Ellis had singled for a 1-0 lead.
The Cougars jumped on top in the top of the sixth with a two-out rally as Chase Edwards reached base the hard way by getting plunked and Cody Heifner dialed long distance for a two-run homer and a 2-1 Cleveland State lead.
The Eagles came right back in the seventh to take the lead for good. Troy Hughes singled in both runs after a double by Tyler Bigler and a walk to George Burnham for a 3-2 advantage.
Heath Petty came on to toss two perfect innings to seal the win for the Eagles and pick up the save. Herndon tossed seven strong innings giving up only three hits and striking out 10 Cougars to get the win. Zajac pitched six strong innings for the Cougars and Tyler Kilgore took the loss while Bobby Towne also pitched in relief.
