He was born in Polk County on Jan. 23, 1932, to the late James Arthur Mason and Pearl Adeline Goode Mason.
He retired with 20 years service in the United States Air Force with the rank of T-sergeant and served tours of duty in Korea and Vietnam. He also retired after 15 years from Tennessee Chemical Company. He was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church and Gideons International.
He was preceded in death by a brother, James “Bill” Mason; sister, Helen Mason Kimsey; and a stepmom, Vernie Payne Mason.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth E. Mason, of Turtletown; daughters: Donna Mason of Cleveland, and Debra Mizell and husband, Gerald Mizell, of Cleveland; brother and sister-in-law, Glen and Dorothy Mason of Cleveland; grandchildren: Jonathan and wife, Kim Mizell, Jerry Mizell, Jennifer and husband, Nick Chesnut, Christopher Mizell and Megan Crouch; great-grandchildren: Piper, Corey and Dylan Chesnut and Morgan, Mikayla, Macie and Coleston Mizell.
The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2012, from the Akins Funeral Home of Copperhill Chapel with the Rev. Joe Dan Wilkins officiating.
Music will be by Rose Brothers, Janice Reid and Turtletown Quartet.
Pallbearers will be Kenneth Patterson, Tommy Grindstaff, Ronnie Hensley, Tommy Taylor, Vernon Morrow and Hershel Raper. Honorary Pallbearers will be Glenn Callihan and Charles Nicholson.
Interment will follow at Zion Hill Baptist Church Cemetery with full military honors.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 1 p.m. until the funeral hour of 3 p.m.
