He was a 1963 graduate of Charleston High School, where he was president of F.F.A. He was employed with Olin Chemical for 33 years.
He was a member of Charleston Cumberland Presbyterian Church and a past member of Bellefounte Baptist Church. He was also a past president of the Charleston Ruritan Club. He was a committee member of the Keep America Beautiful Business Beautification Award.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Wilburn and Maude Jackson Melton; and his first wife, Patricia Brooks Melton.
Survivors include his wife of 15 years, Linda Melton of Cleveland; sister, Wanda Dillard and husband, Tim, of Cleveland; sisters-in-law, Margaret Manley of Cleveland and Marilyn Logan and husband, Bernard, of Wilson, N.C.; brother-in-law, Norman Wolfgong of Ashburn, Va.; aunts: Audie Keener and Pamela Stafford, both Chatsworth, Ga., Carolyn Bowman of Cisco, Ga., Judy Jackson of Varnell, Ga. and Deborah Ledford and Brenda Green, both of Tennga, Ga.; uncle, Virgil Jackson of Newport News, Va.; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and a host of family and friends.
The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 23, 2010, in the chapel of Ralph Buckner Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill Bond and the Rev. Sam Melton officiating.
Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens with Norman Wolfgong, Bernard Logan, Moe McCormack, Ken Webb, Elmer Chambers and Gary Barham serving as pallbearers.
A white dove release ceremony will conclude the service.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 this evening at the funeral home.
