Low-income elderly and disabled residents in Cleveland and Bradley County are reminded help is available for paying their property taxes, but it will require a visit to the Bradley County Trustee’s Office.

Mike Smith, county trustee, has announced his office continues to accept applications for tax relief and tax freeze programs for area residents who qualify through April 5, 2012.

“The tax relief and tax freeze programs are two very important programs that assist our citizens with their taxes,” according to Bradley County Trustee Mike Smith. “I encourage any citizen who feels they meet the qualification criterion to come to the Trustee’s Office to apply.”

Homeowners who qualified last year still need to reapply. Smith said homeowners are required to reapply yearly.

The tax relief program is a state program for low-income elderly and disabled residents. According to Smith, they will receive a discount ranging from $112 to $137 off their property tax bill. Applicants must make less than $26,830 a year. Permanent and totally disabled veterans, no matter what their income, can also apply.

The tax freeze program is a county program available to residents 65 and older who make less than $29,540 a year. If married, the combined yearly income cannot exceed this number. The program freezes an applicant’s property taxes at the time of application.

To apply, applicants need to take 2010 income information (and spouse information) and a valid form of identification, such as driver’s license or Medicare card, to the Trustee’s office.

“Also, we need a copy of the title or bill of sale if you reside in a mobile home and if your property is in a trust, the state requires a copy of this document as well,” Smith said.

The Trustee’s Office is in the Bradley County Courthouse in Room 104. The Trustee’s Office can be reached at 728-7247 or 728-7248.
