Athens Community Theatre

“The Red Velvet Cake War,” a comedy by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten, opens the Athens Community Theatre season with dinner theater on Sept. 12 at The Arts Center in Athens. Other show dates are Sept. 13-14 and 19-21 at 7:30 p.m., and Sept. 15 at 2 p.m. It is sponsored by Citizen’s National Bank.

Directed by Art Kimball, “The Red Velvet Cake War” stars Bev Harrison, Janet Martin, Renee Nicolo, Bill Swain, Laura Rust, Traci McKenzie, Steve Walker, Rick Parker, Pam Thigpen, Mary Kennedy and Steve Wright. “The Red Velvet Cake War” is a riotously funny Southern-fried comedy brought to you by the playwrights of “Dixie Swim Club,” “Christmas Belles” and “Southern Hospitality.”

The three Verdeen cousins — Gaynelle, Peaches, and Jimmie Wyvette — could not have picked a worse time to throw their family reunion. The cousins face an uphill battle trying to pull of the annual reunion and things spin hilariously out of control when a neighbor’s pet devours everything edible, a one-eyed suitor shows up to declare his love, and a jaw-dropping high-stakes wager is made on who bakes the best red velvet cake.

All dinner theater seats are $25 by reservation only. Doors open at 6 p.m. with dinner at 6:30 p.m., and showtime at 7:30 p.m. Other shows are $12 for adults, $8 for students in advance and at the door.

The second Thursday performance (Sept. 19) is “Family Reunion Night.” Extended family members are admitted for $10 each when at least two tickets are purchased. In addition, the cast and crew are holding their own “Red Velvet Cake War” — come at 6:30 on Sept. 19 to sample cakes and vote with your spare change to determine the winning red velvet cake. Tickets are available at 423-745-8781, at www.athensartscouncil.org, and at The Arts Center.
