Flames end lay off at Classic

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Lee University cross country teams ended a four-week layoff with a trip to the 2012 Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic. Lee was placed in the Blue Race and the Lady Flames finished 41st out of 43, while the Flames were 45th out of 46 in a field made up primarily of NCAA DI and DII programs.

West Virginia University placed three runners in the top nine to win the women’s team competition. Penn State University placed second and Grand Valley State was third.

The individual winner was Sharon Ronoh of Lindsey Wilson College, who finished the 5K race in 17:27.36.

Lee’s top finisher was Jessica Childers. The freshman ran her fastest time of the season, 19:56.76, to finish 179th out of 337 runners.

Cayce Bryan crossed the finish line in 20:15.59 for 219th. Alexis Hewitt was 282nd (21:03.54), Rachel Waltz placed 288th (21:15.52) and Storyie Miller had a time of 21:21.88 (291st).

Junior Emily Arneson finished 319th (22:20.12) and Emily Carden was 325th (22:43.59).

In the men’s race, Eastern Kentucky University edged Grand Valley State for the team win and Arkansas-Little Rock placed third. The individual winner was JJ Webber of Northern Kentucky, who finished the 8K race in 24:43.30.

Lee’s top finisher was Said Ahmed. The senior ran his fastest time of the season, 27:14.47, to finish 224th out of 362 runners.

Mike Walker crossed the finish line in 27:28.74 for 255th place. John Trollinger was 283rd (27:50.54) and Terris Elliott’s time of 27:56.21 put him at 291st.

Austin Stansky finished 308th (28:10.48), Emmanuel Kipchumba was 327th (28:35.35) and Victor Rotich was 331st (28:39.80).

Justin Knuth had a time of 29:22.44 (342nd) and Camden Perez crossed at 30:21.89 (353rd).

Lee will be in action again on October 12 at the Royal Cross Country Challenge. The event will be hosted by Queens University of Charlotte at McAlpine Creek Park.
