“That’s it! That’s it!”
No doubt the bright star generated a great deal of excitement since these men seemingly had been looking for a fulfillment of the prophecy: “And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel” (Matthew 2:6; Micah 5:2)
This excitement set them on a long journey to find the King of the Jews — first to Jerusalem — “for we have seen his star in the east,” they told King Herod (Matthew 2:2).
They asked King Herod, “Where is he that is born King of the Jews?” The one who would be the light of the world was revealed by light — a light that had been shining since the world began. These men were searching for truth.
They did not go to Jerusalem to worship Herod. The one they were seeking would be designated by the star. No other could substitute. Although the king had knowledge of the Scriptures, even he had to make inquiries of the priests and scribes about this matter before he sent them on to Bethlehem. King Herod, also, had to play his part in prophecy for everything to fit the Scripture.
And, yes, you guessed it. There was the star faithfully leading them to the house where they found where the young child was (Matthew 2:9).
They didn’t question. There was no doubt who they found. Their long, arduous journey was rewarded. What God had promised in his Word came true. And they could experience it because they trusted God and obeyed.
The only hope the men from the East had in finding the “King of the Jews” was to follow the star. The only hope we have is also in obedience to God’s truth and following the light. And he is faithful — God does not lie — He is to be trusted (Hebrews 3).
Obedience comes of trust — believing God. God is faithful. How would you feel after you made a statement to a good friend and he would look at you with doubt in his eyes and say, “I wish I could believe you. I want to believe you.” God has never given us reason to doubt him.
God is pleased when we “expect” our prayers to be answered. He delights in our trusting Him because trust brings obedience and obedience brings blessings. And He wants to bless His children.
He is the star which guides us throughout our lives. Trust his Word. It won’t lead in the wrong direction. He is truth and light.
