Former MTSU coach, AD Stanford dies

MURFREESBORO (AP) — John Stanford, a former Middle Tennessee baseball player and coach who went on to become the school’s athletic director, has died. He was 77.

Chuck Ramsay, the funeral director of Woodfin Memorial Chapel in Murfreesboro. confirmed that Stanford died Monday morning. A cause of death wasn’t announced. Middle Tennessee issued a release saying Stanford had died.

Stanford, a member of the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame, played baseball at Middle Tennessee from 1960-63 and coached the team from 1974-87. He led Middle Tennessee to a 402-272-4 record and four NCAA tournament appearances during his coaching tenure.

Stanford served as Middle Tennessee’s athletic director from 1987-94.

Funeral services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Woodfin Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be from 4-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to MTSU Blue Raider Baseball.
