The ritual of resolving to improve one’s health at the beginning of the new year may have more positive benefits than was once imagined.

Although resolutions are easy to start but sustaining them often fails about a month later, University of Scranton, psychologist John Norcross said, “Studies show that people who resolve to change behaviors do much better than non-resolvers who have the same habits that need to be changed.”

Norcross, the author of “Changing for Good,” told, “Americans most often resolve to lose weight; quit smoking; get more exercise; and reduce their alcohol consumption, in that order. These habits and behaviors are very difficult to change, and when you don’t have a well-thought-out plan on how you are going to make sustainable changes that fit into your lifestyle, it leads to failure,” he said.

“Losing weight is the No. 1 New Year’s resolution,” said Jamie Rosen, founder of, which offers a financial incentive to lose weight.

Mark Lee, a local doctor of chiropractic at Cleveland Non-surgical, said he feels the best reason for losing weight and keeping it off should be to improve one’s overall health.

“The more weight you carry the harder it is on your joints and overall health,” he said.

Maggirwar’s personal trainer at Spectrum, Lauren Stacy, said there is great gain by losing weight through exercise as a lifestyle change, which is the most rewarding way to stay in shape.

“Exercise improves your flexibility, strength, heart and lung endurance, muscle definition and tone, a healthier outlook on life and boost your self-esteem,” she said.

Stacy said walking on a treadmill, riding a bicycle, playing tennis — anything cardiovascular to increase your heart rate — will enhance a healthy mind and body.
