Gerald “Jerry” Vernon Smith, 83, of Gilbert, Ariz., and Cleveland, went to be with the Lord and Savior on Thursday, March 13, 2014.

He was born March 18, 1930, in Newton, Kan., to Richard and Ruby Smith.

He joined the Navy at 17 in 1948 and was honorably discharged in 1951.

He moved to Torrance, Calif. to raise his growing family and start Trails Trucking Inc.

In addition to his love for travel and being a great husband and father, he was an avid golfer, loved to talk politics, was loyal, generous and a great listener.

He is survived by the love of his life, his wife, Charlotte; three daughters: Cheryl and her husband, Bob, Janet and her husband, Joe, and Linda and her husband, Mark; and he was a beloved Papaw to nine grandchildren.

We will miss him dearly; but, have the promise that we will see him again.

Whitney & Murphy Funeral Home, 4800 East Indian School Road, Phoenix, Arix. 85018 is in charge of arrangements.
