What once was a movie theater was transformed into a retail store which helps raise money to provide homes.
More than 8,000 square feet of space have now been added to the Habitat ReStore, in a building formerly known as the Cinema Twin.
The ReStore is a “reuse” project, according to architect Doug Caywood of Downtown Design Studio.
“Downtown Design Studio, PLLC has provided architectural services to numerous clients of restoration, renovation, reuse and revitalization projects. Not only has the Grove Avenue site encountered a transformation from a sloped movie theater to a store, but it has now seen the success and the need to expand,” Caywood said.
Located at 300 Grove Ave., the newly expanded ReStore has been reorganized for a better shopping experience for reclaimed and new items donated to the facility.
From clothing and home furnishings to building materials, an eclectic mix of items can be found and typically priced at a bargain, according to Habitat for Humanity officials.
With an increase of inventory and the need for additional receiving, sorting, and showroom space, an expansion was needed.
Paulette Smart, director of Habitat ReStore, said one of the new additions to the building was designated as the receiving area.
“This is the heart of the store and where the donations are received and evaluated,” Smart said.
Contractors and do-it-yourselfers will find expanded floor space for building materials both new and used.
Work supplies can also be purchased at the newly expanded ReStore.
New and used home furnishings have been placed in one of the new additions which make up the 8,605 square-foot addition. Appliances — also both new and used — are displayed inside the structure.
Smart said storage trailers where doors and other building materials such as floor tiles and trim work were eliminated.
“We moved everything inside and it makes for a better shopping experience,” she said.
Two offices, a Family/Volunteer Multi-Purpose Training Center, the expanded showroom, a restroom, and second floor storage allows plenty of room for shoppers and volunteers to utilize the building to its fullest, according to Caywood.
“The premanufactured metal building addition wraps around the corner of the existing building, providing ease of circulation with a roll-up door and canopy at the front for deliveries and a roll-up door at the rear for access to the outside storage area,” Caywood said.
