According to Bradley County General Sessions Court Judge Sheridan Randolph, Charles James Masengale, 29, was arrested early Thursday after a five-day manhunt. His girlfriend, Amber Millaway, 20, was also arrested.
Masengale and Millaway reportedly crashed their car at Georgetown Road and Westside Drive Saturday evening. Cleveland Police officer J.R. Burnette attempted a traffic stop on the car just prior to the crash.
Burnette took Masengale into custody and Millaway was taken to a local hospital for treatment after being injured in the crash.
Masengale was placed in the rear seat of Burnette’s patrol car. He was handcuffed behind his back, according to officials.
While continuing his investigation, Burnette was questioning a witness and Masengale was reportedly able to get his hands in front of his body and crawl through a sliding window into the driver’s compartment of the police car.
Masengale fled toward Hamilton County, crashing the car just inside that county near Mahan Gap. He reportedly had a number of relatives in the area and was located at one of their residences Thursday morning by Cleveland Police Department detectives.
They were aided by U.S. Marshals Service, Bradley County Sheriff’s Office, and Hamilton County and Meigs County law enforcement in their search.
Masengale and Millaway were taken into custody at the home of Millaway’s sister, reports indicated.
Masengale was charged with felony counts of possession of Schedule II [drugs] for Resale (suspected methamphetamine), possession of drug paraphernalia, theft over $10,000, evading arrest, reckless endangerment, convicted felon in possession of a firearm
Masengale's misdemeanor charges include driving on a suspended license, leaving the scene of an accident, reckless driving, violation of financial responsibility and violation of registration.
Masengale was found to have other outstanding warrants from Hamilton County on separate instances, as well, according to Evie West, information officer for Cleveland Police Department.
Millaway was charged with possession of Schedule II for resale and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Bond was set at $65,000 for Masengale and $50,000 for Millaway.
