Holy Week is a very special week in the life of the church. Broad Street United Methodist Church invites you to participate in worship during this week between Palm Sunday, April 1, and Easter Sunday, April 8.

On Palm Sunday morning the Wesley and Chancel Choirs of Broad Street United Methodist Church will combine to form a 40-plus voice choir to present John Rutter’s “Requiem” for the 10:45 sanctuary service.

This work is often presented during Holy Week to observe the passion of Christ. In addition to traditional liturgy sung at the time of the death of a loved one, Rutter has incorporated many familiar scriptural passages, including Psalms 130 and 23 and John 11.

Director of Music Cynthia Johnson will be leading this presentation with organist Joshua Knight and soprano soloist Caitlin Hammon.

Other instrumentalists for this presentation are flute, Fredda Burton; oboe, Sandy Donnegan; cello, Kristina Nelson; harp, Tiffany Envid; timpani, Katie Byrd; and glockenspiel, Joshua Byrd.

The 8:30 sanctuary service for that day will be of Holy Communion. Both sanctuary services will be led by the senior pastor, the Rev. Reed Shell.

In the Triplett Hall worship for Palm Sunday, the Rev. Debbie Stokes will explore Mark’s gospel of Jesus’ two parables, the first as the triumphal entry into Jerusalem and the second as Jesus carried his cross to Calvary. The service of Holy Communion will also be offered in these services at 8:45 and 10:45 a.m.

The traditional Maundy Thursday service will be at 7:30 p.m. on April 5 in the sanctuary with a Tenebrae Service.

Maundy comes from the Latin word for “mandate,” remembering together Christ’s commandment to “love one another.” After celebrating communion, the sanctuary will be progressively darkened as the sacred readings, which describe the events leading up to Christ’s death on the cross, are given. Lenten hymns, anthems and solos will help to tell the story. The altar will be stripped and draped in black in preparation for Good Friday.

Everyone is invited to the Easter Sunrise Service at the Hurt Lodge at Johnston Woods at 6:45 a.m.

The theme for this service will be “The Morning the Journey Changed.” Directions to Johnston Woods may be found on the website www.bsumc.org or by calling the church office 476-5586.

Easter Sunday morning will offer four services.

The informal services in Triplett Hall will be at 8:45 and 10:45 a.m. Sanctuary services will be at 8:30 and 10:45 a.m.

The public is invited to come and celebrate the risen Christ with triumphant music led by brass instruments, children’s choirs, adult choirs and organ.

Both sanctuary services will conclude with the traditional singing of “Hallelujah Chorus.”

Broad Street United Methodist Church is located at the corner of Broad Street and Central Avenue in downtown Cleveland.
