A night after an emotional extra-inning victory over their archrivals, Bradley Central had trouble getting back up for a nondistrict matchup with East Hamilton Wednesday evening at the McKenzie Baseball Complex.
Playing without two starters not dressed out, the Bears, who handed the Hurricanes one of their four losses this season, managed just three hits in a 4-2 defeat to the boys from eastern Hamilton County.
Bradley will return to the diamond Saturday afternoon in Benton to face Polk County in a 4 p.m. contest, before wrapping up the regular season Monday when Chattanooga Central comes to town for Senior Night.
East Hamilton will actually return to BCHS Friday evening to take on Polk County. In just its third year of the school, the Hurricanes have yet to construct a home field.
Only one of Wednesday’s six runs were earned as the teams combined for a half dozen errors and used a combined six pitchers to give many of their hurlers some work.
East Hamilton (28-4) got on the board first with a pair of runs in the top of the second when a pair of Bear errors led to two unearned runs.
The Hurricanes scored again in the third when a hit batsman and two more Bradley miscues put the visitors up 3-0.
Bradley (18-11-1) got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth when senior Robbie Works opened the at bat with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch and came home on a two-out Hurricane error on a ball hit by Bear sophomore Cal Pickel.
Both teams circled the bases once in the seventh frame.
East Hamilton’s Hunter Parker led off the top of the inning with a walk, was sacrificed to second and scored when Gary Price laced a single up the middle.
In one of the strangest ways to score, Bradley picked up a run in the bottom of the frame.
Senior Corey Loftis reached on an error after the ball got away on a swinging third strike. The Hurricane reliever then threw the ball away on a pickoff attempt, allowing Loftis to get all the way to third.
After the next two batters both struck out and had to be thrown out at first due to the ball getting past the catcher, sophomore Baylor Terrell and senior Chase Wiseman both walked with Loftis scoring on a wild pitch before the final out was recorded.
Sophomore Chandler Duggan had two of the Bear hits.
East Hamilton’s Patrick Parris picked up the pitching victory, tossing the first five frames, while Nic Auger earned the save despite the quirky seventh.
Junior Ryan Blair (4-1) took the loss despite giving up just one hit and no earned runs in three innings on the hill. Junior Jacob Maynard gave up a pair of hits while working the fourth and fifth frames, while Works toed the rubber for the final two innings.
