Summer is in full swing and, as Bradley County children are participating in summer camps, neighborhood baseball games, front yard soccer matches and the like, many of them are outfitted in brand new tennis shoes thanks to our local Junior Auxiliary chapter.

JA of Cleveland partnered with Cleveland City and Bradley County school counselors to identify the needs in their schools, and for the second consecutive spring, they were able to fulfill every need made known.

JA volunteers shopped for shoes and delivered them personally to area schools to be distributed to students.

This project is funded by JA's Melissa Huggins Jones Memorial Have a Heart and Give a Sole 5K Race, renamed this year for the JA member who was killed last year, just days after relocating to North Carolina from Cleveland for a new job.

Jones had such a heart for children, and played an integral role in pioneering the race last year.

This year's 5K and 1-mile Fun Run will be held on Aug. 2 at the Greenway Park pavilion off Raider Drive.

Details and registration are available at active.com. Each registration provides one new pair of tennis shoes to an area child.
