A lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late Tom Townsend. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Joyce Townsend Jones; his stepfather, Warren Longwith;and two special aunts: Edna “Bradford” Taylor and Patsy “Bradford” Plott.
He had been an active member of Calhoun First Baptist Church his whole life where he served as a deacon, and was also an ordained minister who would bring messages through his preaching at various churches in the area.
He was a graduate of Tennessee Wesleyan College with academic honors. He was a hard worker throughout his life and proved this early on as a successful farmer and employee of M&M Mars Inc.
He enjoyed nature, sports and spending time with his friends and family. He gave so much of himself to others and was a joy to be around. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
He leaves behind his precious mother and caregiver, Lucille Bradford Townsend Longwith of Calhoun; two nephews and their wives: Taylor and Tabatha Jones of Athens and Cameron and Jane Jones of Pensacola, Fla.; two great-nephews: Ty and Tauren Jones of Athens; one great-niece, Serenity Jones of Pensacola; a very special family friend and caretaker, Charles Austin of Cleveland; and many extended family members which he loved just the same.
He will always be remembered for serving the Lord.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, Oct. 8, 2012, at Calhoun First Baptist Church with the Rev. Kevin Cheatham, the Rev. Barry Purser and Steve Byrum officiating.
Interment will follow in the Calhoun Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. today at Smith Funeral & Cremation Services of Athens.
The body will lie in repose for one hour before the service at the church.
Active pallbearers will be Taylor, Cameron, Ty and Tauren Jones, Eddie Smith, Walter Barham, Coy Harbison, Robbie Townsend and Gary Bradford. Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Fair, Reid Davis, Gorden Michaels, Dan Walker, Alvin Stephenson, George Harbison, Larry Foster, John Powers, Bob Townsend, the Rev. Dean Fugate, Vic Walker, Terry Townsend, Larry Green, Francis Rogers, Randy Brock, Rick Young, the Rev. Kevin Cheatham, and the Men’s Sunday school class of Calhoun First Baptist Church
