Dump trucks carrying 10 cubic yards of concrete mix at a time travel between the two points. The first batch of concrete was poured at 8:17 Tuesday morning. At the end of the 200-day contract when the apron, runway and taxiway are to be finished, approximately 4,000 loads will have been carried from the plant to where it is put on the ground. A slip-form paver forms the concrete in strips 36 feet wide and 11 inches thick. The concrete rests on five inches of aggregate base material.
The original construction deadline on the 200-day contract was Oct. 18. However, wet weather delayed construction two days last week and another half-day was lost when a conveyor at the temporary plant broke.
The scope of work includes the 5,500-foot by 100-foot runway, a full parallel taxiway 35 feet in width and apron area 317 feet by 982 feet wide. The pavement will consist of approximately 122,000 cubic yards of concrete and 32,000 tons of crushed aggregate for the 5-inch base.
Hinkle Contracting Co., Paris, Ky., won the Phase III contract with a bid of $7.055 million. The Cleveland Municipal Airport Authority is still hopeful of a November opening.
The concrete floor on the second level of the terminal building was poured Wednesday. The 8,000-square-foot building is scheduled for completion
J&J Construction, Chattanooga, bid $2.412 million to construct the building. The job was divided into three categories: site preparation, security and the terminal building. Those two segments are funded through grants. The terminal building, which came in at slightly less than $1.9 million, is funded through a combination of grants and private donations. Cleveland Regional Jetport is located at 251 Dry Valley Road.
