John Thomas Smith, 76, of Athens, passed away on Saturday morning, Aug. 10, 2013, at his home.
He was born in Monroe County on Sept. 10, 1936. He was retired from the Athens Bed Company after 42 years of service. He and his late wife, Ruby, enjoyed going camping, going to the mountains, seeing his five grandchildren, traveling to watch his grandson, Cody, go dirt biking and, until he was unable, working on his farm.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Ruby N. Webb Smith, who passed away on Feb. 9, 2013. He is also preceded in death by his parents, Riley David and Mable Dawson Smith; his brother, David Fredrick Smith; his grandparents: John and Mary Self Smith and Joseph A “Joe” and Hattie Holt Dawson; and one granddaughter, Alyssa Smith.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory one son, Tim D. Smith and his wife Rachel; his five grandchildren: Cody, Brandi, Christi, Garrett and Tori; one sister, Jo Ann Bledsoe and her husband Bill, of Cleveland; two beloved aunts, Dorothy Dawson Frisbie and Anna Smith Johnson; his uncle, Kenneth “Chick” Dawson of Rockford, Ill.; three nieces; one nephew; and many cousins, extended family members and friends.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at the family farm.
