John Sherald Still, 71, passed away Monday, Jan. 20, 2014, in Memphis.

He is survived by one son, John Alan Still of San Antonio.

Moving to Memphis in the early 1970s, his deep love of the mid-South meant that following retirement he would continue to call Memphis home. Not one to slow down, he would try his hand at acting.

Being a natural in front of the camera and blessed with a golden voice, he would quickly become the first choice of many directors and casting agents for featured extra roles and as a lead actor. He appeared in more than 16 different movies, including roles for writer and director Craig Brewer’s films “The Poor and Hungry,” “Hustle and Flow,” “Black Snake Moan,” and 2011’s “Footloose” remake.

Later this year his acting skills will be featured in the film “Girl in Woods” and “The Short” by Miles2Go Productions, which made the film “Grace.” From John Still: “One of the greatest things about acting for movies or television is that your work will live on long after you’re gone. So always respect the time that you are given in front of the camera. It’s a gift, so treat it that way.”

Arrangements will be announced later by Ralph Buckner Funeral Home and Crematory.
