Joseph Isaiah Owens, 69, a resident of Mayo, Fla., passed away Tuesday, March 19, 2013, after a massive heart attack.

He was born in Bremen, Ga., on Nov. 22, 1943, the son of Allen Owens and Lucille Priest Owens.

He attended Bremen High School, Lee University, and West Georgia College, earning two degrees.

He had a distinguished service in the Vietnam War, earning a Bronze Star and two Army Commendation Medals, among others.

After his military service, he was purchasing manager (CPM) at Southwire in Carrollton, Ga., for 22 years. Afterward, he lived in Newnan, Ga., and was purchasing manager (CPM) for 10 years at Yokogawa. In 2002, he moved to Mayo and worked at Suwannee American Cement as the purchasing manager (CPM) until the time of his death.

He was a strong Christian and an honest, God-fearing, intelligent man, with an incredible work ethic. He will be sorely missed.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Anita Polatta Owens; their two sons: Mark and Andrew; Mark’s wife, Hannah; his four grandchildren: Andrew, Elisabeth, Gabriel and Jackson; five siblings: Bill, Everett, Jack and Doy Owens, of Cleveland, and Evelyn Uchida of Atlanta; brother-in-law, Jim Bray; and sister-in-law, Frances Bray.

A viewing was held on Friday, March 22, 2013, in Live Oak, Fla., at Daniels Funeral Home.

The funeral was held on Saturday, March 23, 2013, at 1 p.m. in Live Oak at the funeral home.
