Joyce Cook Rice, 83, passed peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, in her home in Cleveland.

She was born in Martinsville, Ind., Aug. 31, 1929, and grew up in the Crawfordsville, Ind., area.

She married and returned to Crawfordsville in the middle 1960s, obtaining her real estate license and beginning her new career out of a little room on the farm she and her husband, Gene Rice, owned off of State Road 136 near Mace, Ind., selling 68 houses in her first year.

She went on to grow one of the most prominent real estate companies, Rice Realty in Montgomery County, over the next several years, eventually building a large real estate complex on the outskirts of town.

She was an honest, vibrant, well-versed, savvy businesswoman and was loved by many. In her retirement she traveled the Caribbean for nine years on a 50-foot sailboat with Gene, and they both lived a wonderful and full life.

She was preceded in death by Gene Rice, her husband; Stephanie Rice, her daughter-in-law; and Brian Rice, her grandson.

Survivors include her son, Mark Rice; daughter, Jo Rice; granddaughters, Cresta Davis and Alanna Rice; grandsons, Chad Rice and Adam Rice; and great-grandchildren: Bobby Davis, Gabrielle Davis and Alex Davis.

The North Ocoee Chapel of Jim Rush Funeral Homes had charge of arrangements.
