“The line was already forming at 7:30 a.m.,” said Cheryl Dunson, board member, “and by 9 a.m., it was out the gate.”
Even though there was some concern since it was Easter weekend attendance would be down, that wasn’t the case.
“It never stopped,” said Joanne Maskew, KAB’s executive director. “We were that busy.”
And although the wait was about a half-an-hour on average, even with two lines at one point, few people complained, said Shari Horton, KAB board member.
Organizers allowed people to come through the line until 1:45 p.m., even though it was officially supposed to close at 1 p.m.
“The response was so good,” she said.
A second such event in the fall also was suggested by Dunson. This event had been held twice yearly, but this year the state withdrew funding. The event was only able to be held at all thanks to the Bradley County government sponsoring it.
“Such events keep landfills healthier,” Dunson said.
Two such events per year had been held previously. Dunson also suggested the KAB Education Committee should consider providing additional education throughout the year on what waste the event specifically will accept, as well as how to properly package the waste.
In addition, Horton reported attendance at the It’s All About the Green event at Cleveland State Community College drew more than twice as many visitors as the year before.
“It was a good turnout,” Horton said.
