Kiwanians swarmed Kmart to shop for Head Start children in need of warm clothing for winter on Tuesday, Dec. 11.
“It felt wonderful for all those involved to know they were helping to supply much-needed clothing to these very young children at a time when the weather is getting very chilly,” said Traci Hamilton, Young Children: Priority One co-chairperson.
Each child received at least one complete outfit and a warm sweatshirt or jacket. Kiwanis raises money during the year to fund the shopping venture.
Said Hamilton, “Kmart managers and employees were wonderful in providing excellent discounts for this shopping day. They also were delightful to work with, chipping right in to help find items or to package them. We can’t thank them enough.”
On Wednesday, the packages were distributed to the individual children at this year’s two Head Start classrooms at Blythe EHS I & II and East Cleveland/Park View.
“It is very rewarding to sponsor this event,” said Kiwanis Club President Chris Newton. “Kiwanis exists to serve the community, and we believe that one of the most important services we can perform is to help our local children. There is nothing else like having a little girl and little boy come up to you with the twinkle of pure delight in their eyes to say thank you and give you a big hug with a huge smile on their faces. This is what drives me and all of the members of our Kiwanis Club: changing the world one child and one community at a time.”
Kiwanis and its sponsored organizations promote the ideals of voluntary service as a means to improve lives and give something back to the community. The Kiwanis Club of Cleveland sponsors the Walker Valley High School Key Club, Cleveland High School Key Club, and the Cleveland Middle School Builders Club. The Kiwanis Club of Cleveland was founded in 1920 and provides services to the community through a number of special programs and events. The Kiwanis International Mission is “To Serve Children of the World.”
