BENTON — It took the Lady Wildcats five innings to decide they wanted to get a win over Harriman in the first game of a softball doubleheader in Benton Saturday. When they did, Polk County scored just enough to pull out a 1-0 win over the Lady Blue Devils.

Jordan Triplett got the win for the Lady Wildcats, scattering three hits in five innings. Polk picked up the win on only two hits.

"Their pitcher did a good job. She threw the ball by us. I think we hit two balls hard the whole game and Lydia (Triplett) hit them both. But, we also played pretty good defense and that kept us in the game. We just have to hit from top to bottom," said Lady Wildcats coach Bill Triplett.

"We've got some young kids we have inserted because of injuries and other things,” he said. “She just threw it by us."

Polk third baseman Lydia Triplett got the first hit for the Lady Wildcats with a solid one-out double to left field. She was left standing after reaching third on a wild pitch.

The Lady Wildcats broke the scoreless game in the bottom of the fifth.

Felicia Johnson reached first on a Blue Devils error and put herself in scoring position by stealing second. Taylor Carroll ended the first of the two-game set with a slow roller single that scored Johnson.

"A game like this you've got to score every chance you get. That's good competition for us," said Triplett. "Our eight and nine-hole hitters came through for us. That's a plus. Taylor got a big hit late in the game to drive in a run so I can't complain. She did what she is supposed to do."

In Game 2, Harriman picked up a couple of unearned runs thanks to a Lady Wildcat error, but the rest of the game belonged to the home team.

Polk County exploded for a half dozen runs in the bottom of the third frame and then tacked on a solo run in the fourth to secure to the victory.

Jordan Triplett provided the big blows in the victory, going 2-for-3 at the dish with a three-run home run and a double. Lydia Triplett went 2-for-3 at the plate as well.

Hannah Triplett improved her pitching record to 3-4 on the season with a three-hitter, striking out a pair and not issuing a free pass or an earned run. She also stroked a double to help out her own cause.

Polk County will hit the road this week for games at Cleveland High Monday, Meigs County Wednesday and Sequoyah on Thursday, the latter two of which are District 5-AA contests.
