MORRISTOWN — The nationally 16th-ranked Lady Senators of Walters State flexed their considerable muscle Saturday afternoon and quickly disposed of the Cleveland State Lady Cougars in the final two games of their four-game weekend series.

After splitting a twin bill on Friday, Kelsey Weddle and Lindsey Vaught did their part in the circle for the Lady Senators. Each lady tossed a one-hitter on both ends of the doubleheader and Walters State claimed an 8-0 win in each game, taking three of the four games in the series.

A hit batter, an error and a sacrifice fly accounted for the first runs of the day when the Lady Senators (21-5, 14-3) took a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning. Andrea Elson belted a three-run homer in the second to push the lead to 5-0 and Kaylea Payne added a two-run double in the fifth to finish game one in only five innings.

Four Lady Cougar miscues and three Walters State hits added up to a six-run first inning in game two, which would be all the run support Weddle needed. Payne knocked in another run in the fifth for good measure as the home team ended the game in five innings.

Kelsey Haley and Ida Watson handled the pitching duties for Cleveland State (8-17, 5-14) while Ciera Belcher picked up the only Lady Cougars’ hit in game one. Leslie Still had the only safety in game two.

The Lady Cougars return home to host Jackson State next weekend in a four-game series.
