Lady Flames open strong

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The Lee volleyball team opened defense of its Southern States Athletic Conference tournament title by defeating the University of Mobile 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-20) on Thursday morning. Coach Andrea Hudson's squad will take the rest of the day off and resume pool play on Friday at 11 a.m. against Emmanuel College.

Freshman Nicole Sumida paced the Lady Flames' attacking offense. She had 13 kills (.435 hitting percentage) and a pair of blocks. Marija Zelenovic and Irene Ojukwu countered with nine kills and two blocks apiece. Paula Martins chipped in with six kills and five big blocks, while Lauren Williams added six kills and three blocks. As a team Lee registered a strong .433 attack mark.

Camil Martinez dished off 34 assists and Libby Peigen added 14 digs. The win is Lee's 25th of the season against nine defeats. The lady Flames are ranked ninth nationally by the NAIA.

Mobile was led by Kiara Gay with 11 kills and nine digs. Lee's defense held the Rams to only a .110 attack percentage.
