CLINTON, Miss. — The Lee University softball team will enter postseason play on Wednesday as it takes part in the National Christian College Athletic Association Mid-East Region Tournament.

The three-day event will take place at the MC Softball Complex on the campus of Mississippi College, May 7-9.

The Lady Flames (23-22) will open up on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. against fellow Gulf South Conference rival Union University. Lee took two of three from the Bulldogs (25-25) in Jackson during the regular season. Senior Meghan Macias went 6-for-8 in the series with a home run, double and five RBIs. Angie Hughes (7 IP, 1 ER, 5 K’s) and Annabeth Pruett (7 IP, 1 ER, 2 Ks) both pitched complete games in Lee’s two victories.

The Lady Flames will enter the tournament playing some of their best ball of the season. Lee is 8-3 in their last 11 contests and ended regular season play with a decisive three-game sweep of conference opponent Christian Brothers (11-1, 11-2, 11-0).

Leading the way for Head Coach Emily Russell’s club is senior slugger Ana Coscorrosa. The native of Venezuela is hitting a sizzling .488 with 10 homers and 69 RBIs. Coscorrosa has already set Lee records in career batting average, hits and RBIs. Lexie Dean (.447), Amanda Lynn (.422) and Dominique Hannah (.368) have also been big contributors to a high-powered Lee offensive attack.

The Lady Flames will play Thursday regardless of Wednesday’s outcome. If Lee can get past Union in the opener, they will play at 3 p.m. A loss would drop them back to the 5:30 slot.

Campbellsville University (42-17) will enter as the No. 1 seed of the five-team field. The Tigers are members of the NAIA and the Mid-South Conference. Union will be the No. 2 seed followed by the Lady Flames at three while the Choctaws (29-10, NCAA DIII) and Hiwassee College (NCCAA) round out the field at four and five respectively.

A champion could be crowned at the conclusion of Friday’s 3:30 contest. If no team is unbeaten after the 3:30 game, the championship will take place at 6 p.m. The winner will earn an automatic bid to the 2014 NCCAA Softball National Tournament May 15-17 in Roanoke, Va.
