LADY FLAMES’ Charlie Wooden is greeted at the plate following a three-run home run in game one of a two-game series with Shorter College, Wednesday, at Lee.
The Lady Flames (42-8, 19-4 SSAC) won the opener 6-4 and the Lady Hawks (39-8, 19-4 SSAC) took the finale 6-1 at soggy Butler Field.
After moving the game from Tuesday to Wednesday due to rain, the teams had to endure a delay of nearly three hours prior to the day’s first pitch. At the end of the night, no ground was gained or lost as the teams remained deadlocked at the top of the SSAC East Division standings. Both teams have dates remaining with Brenau University and Truett-McConnell College.
The Lady Flames travel to Gainesville, Ga., to face Brenau at 2 p.m. on Friday and have a noon date with Truett-McConnell in Cleveland, Ga., on Saturday.
Savanna Bell and Ana Coscorrosa led the Lee offense with four hits each. Bell was 3-for-3 with a double and three runs scored in game one, while Coscorrosa was 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored.
Charlie Wooden drilled a three-run home run in her first at bat of the day and finished 2-for-7 with five RBIs.
Shorter grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the first stanza of game one with a sacrifice fly by Emily Clements. Lee came storming back to post four runs in the bottom of the first with an RBI double from Coscorrosa and Wooden’s seventh round-tripper of the season.
The Lady Hawks tied the game at 4-4 in the fourth inning with a two-run home run by Maddie Bray and added another off an errant throw.
Lee would take the lead with an unearned run in the next frame and add an insurance run in the sixth with an RBI single by Coscorrosa.
Brittany Balough (22-2) earned the win after giving up four runs (three earned), eight hits, walking four and striking out five in 6 2/3 innings.
Jessa Watts picked up her third save of the season after inducing a pop-up on her only pitch of the game.
Game two saw Shorter tally two runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings in building a 6-0 lead. The Lady Flames avoided the shutout with an RBI single by Wooden in the sixth.
Watts (15-5) was charged with the loss after giving up six runs (five earned) in seven innings pitched. The left-hander allowed seven hits, walked one and fanned two.
